    What: Halo: Reach Free-For-All Tournament
    When: Saturday, October 2nd; 5:00pm
    Tournament Starts at 5:45pm
Where: UC McKenna (2nd Floor, by Skibo)

So how much schoolwork have you gotten done in the past week? Probably none, since you've been playing Halo: Reach, right? I don't blame you, it's a really fun game. Hey, do you wanna win a free Halo: Reach Wireless Controller with which to pwn n00bs? Of course you do, because the thing looks awesome.

Tell you what, we're giving one of those away (along with a token for a Banshee Aircraft Avatar Item, and a couple of other surprises!) at our tournament, so you could get one just by doing what you've been doing all week (playing Halo). Sounds like a good deal, right? A small $5 entry-fee is all we ask (and since the controller is worth $60, that's a pretty good deal). The winner of the tournament gets the controller, and we're gonna raffle off the Banshee Aircraft Avatar Item (and other surprises) amongst the remaining entrants (place better for more raffle tickets). Did you know that you can't even buy that avatar item on Xbox Live? You'll be the envy of all your friends with one of those things!

Oh, and even if you don't wanna compete, we're still gonna have free-play for Halo: Reach (and some Smash Bros. off to the side) before and after the tournament. You'll be able to make new friends, stick plasma grenades to rivals, and form teams for future Halo: Reach tournaments! Oh yeah, if you think that the controller we're giving away is sweet, remember that if this event gets enough attendance, the prizes at our next Halo: Reach event are just gonna blow you away!

    RULES
    • The $5 fee must be paid before the tournament starts (of course, admission to the event and the free-play are all free). Your entry will also come with one raffle ticket. You can earn more raffle tickets by placing higher in the tournament.
    • As far as setup goes, we've only got enough controllers for a couple of people. We encourage you to bring your own controller. Any extra controllers you bring for others to use will net you one extra raffle ticket.
    • Set your look inversion and sensitivity before the round starts. Pausing during the round will result in immediate disqualification.
    • Gametype will be Slayer Pro free-for-all, maps will be specified at the start of each round. All players must use the default spartan character.

The tournament will be divided into "blocks", with each block containing sixteen or fewer payers. Each block will go through the following:
    • The first round will include all 16 players. The top four players move onto the semifinals.
    • The second round will be among the 12 remaining players. Again, the top four will move onto the semifinals.
    • The third round will pit the remaining eight players against each other. The top two players will move onto the finals.
    • The final semifinals round will be between the remaining six players. The top two players of this match will move onto the finals.
This setup will give each player two chances to make it into semifinals and semifinalists will have two chances to make the finals.

The final round will be between all of the finalists (assuming 6 or less finalists) and it will go to 50 kills. The winning order of this game determines what the player’s final place will be in the tournament. If there were more than 6 finalists, numbers will be culled in a similar manner to the above blocks.

[10.02.10] - Halo: Reach Lone Wolves Tournament Empty questions...

How will the later games be mapped in terms of players per console. Since it is FFA, players tend to have an advantage when they are on a console with less players per console. Will the finals be a console per person? If that is the case, will there ever be a case where players would have less people on their console than others in the same game. i.e. in a case where the number of people who enter is 45, how do you break up people when 13 people are playing in a block?

We will ensure that each console in use has the exact same number of players on it, and that each player will have the exact same screen size (and that the screen size will be larger rather than smaller if at all possible). This means that early games will be played on quarter-size screens, with later games being played on half-size screens, and final games being played on full-size screens.

A perfect (divisible by 2, 3, or 4) distribution will be ensured through the use of "ghosts". If the number of people in a block are not in a perfect distribution, an OGS official or two will enter the block as a ghost. They're pretty good at Halo, and will tear the place up just like any other contestant. The only difference is that ghosts will be unable to advance through the tournament (when deciding "top four players" they will be discounted).

Due to the mathematics of the blocks, ghosts will not be needed past the second round of each block. Please keep in mind that this tournament is, in addition to a competition, a trial to see campus interest in Halo: Reach (this is the reason for the entry fee). If we have a decent turnout, future Halo: Reach tournaments will see bigger prizes, free admission, and more dedicated equipment (we've only got 4 displays, unless someone wants to bring more). Future tournaments will also have a team-play division as well.

Wow, thanks for the reply. That definitely sounds like you take fairness seriously and goes way beyond what I expected. I'm in.

I saw that you said we can change our look sensitivity and inversion; can we also change our button configuration? I have been using recon since it came out.
Also, I have an XBox and a 17 inch HD display. Should I bring the display even though it's relatively small? If not, should I bring the XBox without the TV?
